Parking is permitted on both sides of the park drive for concerts.  There are limited "pull in" parking spaces

for those who wish to listen from their cars.  Come early for best parking. Picnic facilities are available.

Directions from I-81 exit 225.  At the bottom of the ramp go west on VA 262.  (Left if on I-81 N. Right if on I-81S)  Follow 262 past 3 cross streets and take the Churchville Avenue exit.  Get into the left lane at the botton of the exit onto Churchville Avenue (US 250) and turn left.  Follow 250 East/Churchville Avenue into Staunton. After you pass the first traffic light, watch for the Tastee Freez on your right and turn right on the street at the end of their parking lot.  Take the first left.  This takes you into the park where you will have to turn right onto the park drive.  Follow the park drive to the bandstand area. (At the "Y" in the road stay to the left.)

Directions from I-81 exit 220.  When you take exit 220 you are on VA 262.  Take the 4th exit for Parkersburg Pike.  Turn right at the end of the exit ramp.  As you cross the city limits, this becomes West Beverley Street.  Turn left onto Thornrose Avenue at the 3rd traffic light.  As you pass Grace Christian School this street curves to the right.  Just past the curve turn left into Gypsy Hill Park or park on the street and walk in.

Directions from Motels on US 250 east of Staunton:  The easiest way is to get on I-81 south and follow the directions from exit 220 above.  You can also follow US 250 west into Staunton.  US 250 takes you directly to Gypsy Hill Park, but with quite a few turns along the way.

Directions from the Staunton Mall area:  take the ramp onto VA 262 right in front of Applebees.  Follow the directions for exit 220.

Dovel Memorial Concert
Stonewall Brigade Bandstand
Gypsy Hill Park
Monday July 14, 2008
8:00 P.M.
On July 17, 2007, Gary and Martha Dovel were hit head on by a tractor-trailer on Route 15 in Louisa County. Neither survived. The Dovels were the second generation owners of Shen-Valley Band Instrument Service in Harrisonburg, which was started by Willard Dovel, Gary's father, in the late 1940's, about the time when the first local high school band was formed at Beverley Manor High School, just across the road from the bandstand.  Shen-Valley started as an instrument repair shop and expanded to include instrument rental and sales. It is still being operated by the third generation of the family.

Gary Fagan, band director at Henley Middle School near Crozet and well-known nationally published band composer, was commissioned by the band directors of VBODA District 5 and 13 to write a piece in memory of the Dovel family. Gary began by writing this poem that expressed his feelings for the Dovels, his friends for over 36 years. It was premiered on February 3, 2008 at three different locations at All-District band events.

I turned around and they were gone,
The ones who helped us play the song.

On strength and faith their labors laid,
And the music of our lives was played.

They walked the path of humble grace,
And made the world a tuneful place.

I’d like to think they’re fixing things,
The harps for those with angels wings.

For In our hearts, their love we hold,
For now they walk..........on streets of gold.

Click here to see a short video of Gary Fagan rehearsing On Streets of Gold with the band on May 12 2008.

You need Quicktime on your computer to play this movie.
