Gary Fagan, band director at Henley Middle School near Crozet and well-known nationally published band composer, was commissioned by the band directors of VBODA District 5 and 13 to write a piece in memory of the Dovel family. Gary began by writing this poem that expressed his feelings for the Dovels, his friends for over 36 years. It was premiered on February 3, 2008 at three different locations at All-District band events.
I turned around and they were gone,
The ones who helped us play the song.
On strength and faith their labors laid,
And the music of our lives was played.
They walked the path of humble grace,
And made the world a tuneful place.
I’d like to think they’re fixing things,
The harps for those with angels wings.
For In our hearts, their love we hold,
For now they walk..........on streets of gold.
Click here to see a short video of Gary Fagan rehearsing On Streets of Gold with the band on May 12 2008.
